2015 Third Quarter Science Work Samples

Learning How to Measure Solids
Ooblek, solid or liquid?
The bulk of our science work (other than normal seasonal nature stories and just living in Alaska) has revolved around the states of matter at home.  Clarity has really been into hands on experimentation so we have set up many experiments relating to the states of matter as well as changing the states of matter.  We have also worked with how to quantify solids, liquids, and gases.

Outside of regular homeschooling we were fortunate to be able to take a trip to sunny California.  We spent two weeks enjoying the Central California coast and learned so many things along the way.  Some of the highlights included sea kayaking though the estuary sloughs in Morro Bay, watching elephant seals, tide-pooling, and just overall playing in the sand and the waves.  We also visited a nice Natural History Museum in Morro Bay, as always our travels are rich in education for all of us.

Now that we're back we will shift focus and start doing some fun projects and activities centered around animals and their habitats.  We have also planted our starts for this year's garden.  I try to include writing in all of our activities so we are keeping a garden journal this summer.
