Language Arts

Our language arts curriculum began the year with the beginning of Clarity’s letter stories.  The letters are learned in several different “blocks”, the first of which (which happened in September) covered 9 consonants (G, M, D, J, N, P, R, T, L).
The teaching of each letter begins with a story, one in which you can draw the letters out of the story (eg story of a raven for “R”).  This is followed by 2 days of story recall and artwork until on the third day you work on writing the letter, first with your hand in the air or your foot on the floor, then in a sand tray, then on a blackboard, and then into our main lesson book (which is supposed to represent our best work).  We also make “verse readers” using verses from the story.  Clarity has a special main lesson book where she works on copying important passages in the stories we are working with.  We have also introduced practice sheets to work on her writing and have been using a workbook series called "Handwriting Without Tears" to supplement.
Future work will include finishing the consonants and working with vowels, moving onto work family work, and hopefully some reading work by the end of this school year.
