Science 1st Quarter Work Sample: A Need To Be Hands On

Fall Colors Were Abundant In Colorado
We started this semester by traveling to the Lower 48.  During out trips to Colorado and Oregon there were plenty of opportunities to study science, from the caves we visited in Glenwood Springs to discussing the finer points of fall leaf colors.  We ended the journey with a trip to the Oregon Coast and a visit to Fort Stevens, a military installation at the mouth of the Columbia River that is on National Register of Historic Places.

This quarter we have been discussing cycles in nature.  So far we have covered the water cycle and fire cycle thus far.  Clarity has shown a great interest in doing "experiments" so we have recently shifted gears to do some more "hands on" work.  At the moment we are looking into phases of matter and have done several hands on projects involving substances that can change states and how we measure and describe them.  For these subjects we have switched to using various components of "Beyond the Moving Page" for our science.  Clarity has also tremendously enjoyed watching "Bill Nye the Science Guy" as a way to reinforce the concepts we have been discussing.
